The six module types
When you click New module (top right of Settings → Modules), you choose one of these:
Module type | What it's for |
📱 App ordering | Ordering through the app. Choose a ticket or grid layout, same-day ordering or pre-ordering, and produce orders by print or on a kitchen display screen. |
🥗 Lunch plan | Recurring menus with automatic weekly orders, for example a school or workplace lunch plan. |
☕ Hospitality catering | Catering for meetings, conferences and events. |
📋 Menu display | Show menus on screens, in the app or in print, without ordering. |
🧾 POS & Kiosk | Point of sale for canteen checkout. Set up as a staff-operated POS or a self-service kiosk at till level. |
🏠 Homescreen | Your branded landing page in the app, with cards, shortcuts and banners. |
How to create a new module
In Kanpla admin, go to Settings → Modules.
Click New module in the top right corner.
Type: choose the module type (see the table above), then click Next.
Go through the steps for your module type and click Next after each one. Hover over an option for a short explanation.
On the last step, click Create module. Your new module now appears in the list under Settings → Modules.
The steps you see depend on the module type:
Module type | Steps after choosing the type |
App ordering, Lunch plan, Hospitality catering | Locations → Product groups → Name → Available for → Ordering flow → Display → Order fields → Payments → Fulfilment |
Menu display | Locations → Product groups → Name → Available for → Display |
POS & Kiosk | Locations → Product groups → Name → Ordering flow → Order fields → Payments → Fulfilment. Add your tills and operators on the module page afterwards. |
Homescreen | Locations → Name → Available for → Display. You edit the homescreen content itself under App → Homescreen. |
💡 Tip: if you have many locations with their own modules, use a clear naming convention, for example Location name - App ordering, so modules are easy to tell apart.
Module settings at a glance
Click a module under Settings → Modules to open its settings. They're grouped in sections, which you'll find in the menu on the left. Which sections you see depends on the module type.
Section | What you set there |
Availability | Where and for whom the module is available: locations (and user groups), the product groups it sells from, who can access it (Available for) and admin codes (Admins and approvers). |
Ordering flow | When and how users order, for example same-day ordering or pre-ordering, deadlines, weekends, automatic orders (Lunch plan), a required product or room booking (Hospitality catering). |
Display | How the module looks in the app: the navigation tab (name, icon, and whether it shows on desktop and phone), the main screen, which product details are shown and checkout instructions. |
Order fields | Information you collect at checkout, such as an invoice reference, custom questions or a delivery time. |
Payments | Whether users pay by card or invoice, plus options such as showing the balance, a minimum order value and receipts. |
Fulfilment | How orders reach the kitchen (print or tickets, or a kitchen display screen), plus timing settings and packaging. |
Tills and Operators | The tills and kiosks that use the module, and the staff login profiles. |
Advanced | External ID, VAT rate, allergy logs and editing past menus. |
💾 Remember to save. Changes are only saved when you click Save in the top right corner. Cancel discards everything you changed since the last save.
Common setups, step by step
These are the setups we're asked about most. All of them start in Settings → Modules → your module.
🔒 Put a module behind an access code
Under Availability, click Available for.
Choose who can access the module:
Everyone: anyone with the link can access it.
Users only: only registered users can access it.
Users with code: users need a code to access it.
If you chose Users with code, click Codes and add the code.
Click Save in the dialog, then Save in the top right corner.
Users then need the same code on their profile before the module shows up for them.
⏰ Set an order deadline for your module
For modules where users order ahead, such as a lunch plan or hospitality catering:
Under Ordering flow, click Deadlines.
Set the Order deadline, the cut-off for placing and changing orders, for example 15:00 the day before.
Optional: switch on Exclude weekends so weekends don't count towards the deadline.
On Lunch plan modules you can also set:
Small changes deadline: a softer cut-off for small changes to existing orders. It must be later than the order deadline.
Holidays deadline: the cut-off for changing orders around holidays. It must be on or before the order deadline.
Click Save in the dialog, then Save in the top right corner.
A deadline set on a product overrules the module deadline.
➕ Add a fee to every order automatically (Required product)
A required product is automatically added to every order. It's useful for a delivery fee or a service charge, and customers can't complete an order without it.
Create the fee as a product first, for example "Delivery fee", and make sure it's in one of the module's product groups.
Under Ordering flow, click the Required product button.
Select the product.
Choose whether it's visible to the customer, for example shown in the basket.
Optional: click Only if basket contains to add the product only when the basket contains certain products.
Click Save in the dialog, then Save in the top right corner.
📝 Ask for extra information at checkout (Order fields) - Hospitality modules
Use order fields for things like a meeting name, room, cost centre or PO number.
Create your hospitality module first.
Navigate to your hospitality module's setup: Settings > Modules > Your hospitality module.
Scroll to Order fields and click + Add field.
Choose Invoice reference to capture billing or PO references, or Custom field for anything else. On hospitality modules you can also add Event style (let users choose an event layout) and Guest count (ask how many people the booking is for).
For a custom field, fill in a Title and, if you like, a Subtitle.
Choose the type: Single choice, Multiple choice, Text field or Text area.
Switch on Required if users must fill it in before they can order.
Under Availability, choose the locations and, if needed, Show only with products to show the field only when certain products are in the basket.
Click Save in the dialog, then Save in the top right corner. The order fields will now appear in the basket at checkout in the app and on the website.
🕐 Let users choose a delivery or collection time (service windows)
In Order fields, open Delivery time. If it isn't there yet, add it with + Add field.
Set the Input name, for example "Collection time", an optional Description, and the Time intervals, for example every 30 minutes.
Under Service windows, click + Add service window to set the times users can choose from. You can add several windows with different schedules and categories, for example breakfast and lunch.
Optional: switch on Individual delivery time per item.
Click Save in the dialog, then Save in the top right corner.
🗂️ Make sure the right products show up at the right location (Product groups)
A module only shows products from the product groups selected on it.
Under Availability, click Product groups.
Tick the product groups this module should sell from.
Click Save in the top right corner.
If a product doesn't show up in a module, first check that its product group is ticked here.
Good to know
Changes are only saved when you click Save in the top right corner.
Product-level settings, such as a product's own deadline or availability, are still managed in Menu and still overrule the module settings.
Some settings are only shown for the module types they apply to. For example, Deadlines shows on modules where users order ahead.
💬 Need a hand? Have a question, or can't find a setting you used before? Just open the chat in Kanpla admin to find out more. If the chat doesn't have the answer you need, ask for a human agent and we'll gladly help you get to the bottom of it.
